Cedarwood at twenty-two is the hot stone wall, but the sandalwood underneath is what makes this feel inside rather than outside — nine drops of cream against all that dry wood. Three drops of bergamot is the drink at the pool edge; any more tips it refreshing rather than refined. Vetiver at four is the dry grass past the boundary. Myrrh at three is the incense memory.
The Annenberg estate near Palm Springs — manicured lawns, cool water, low midcentury architecture. But past the boundary wall it's the Sonoran desert: dry grass, hot rock, another world. The blend is the line between them.
